Cutting edge jewellery designer Stephen Webster and celebrated chef Mark Hix play a key role in Selfridges' biggest green campaign to date: Project Ocean.
London department store Selfridges has eliminated all endangered fish stocks across its food halls and restaurants, only selling fish from reliable sources. Launching on 11 May, the fiveweek retail activism project will highlight the plight of the world's oceans and encourage people to eat fish from sustainable sources by showcasing unique collaborations between designers and artists.
Mark Hix will host Hix Oyster amp Fish House, a pop up version of his hugely popular restaurant in Lyme Regis, alongside which a dazzling window has been masterminded by none other than creative genius Stephen Webster, the only jewellery designer to be involved in Project Ocean. The eye catching display features an enormous Swarovskiencrusted tuna beneath two clocks encased in the unmistakable shark's jaw that is synonymous with Webster's jewellery designs. Ticktock Tuna your time is up.
Throughout the duration of Webster's Hix inspired window, two of his show stopping jewellery pieces will be on display in The Wonder Room. These oneofakind gems, Titanium Flying Fish cuff and brooch set with Blue Sapphires and Black and White Diamonds, offer an alternative to the more commonly used precious metals, reflecting the spirit of the Project Ocean message. Additionally, Stephen Webster has created a limited edition black leather bracelet with silver fish skeleton, exclusively available at Selfridges. It retails at 100 and 25 of the proceeds will go to Project Ocean.
For years I have found inspiration for my personal and professional life from the sea. We live in a house on the edge of the White Cliffs of Dover. My collections, from Jewels Verne to In Deep, have all originated under the sea. Therefore, to contemplate that everything from fish and chips to the starting point of my next jewellery collection is in imminent danger of disappearing altogether, has a profound effect on me. We are delighted to have been asked to take part in Selfridges' Project Ocean. Comments Stephen Webster.
