During a visit to Japan, Stephen Webster discovered the dramatic visual language of Kabuki theatre - where exaggerated movement, elaborate costumes and striking makeup bring powerful characters to life.

Stephen translated the bold graphic imagery and expressive faces of Kabuki into a piece of jewellery with a big attitude. First created over 30 years ago, the Kabuki Ring has become one of Stephen Webster’s most iconic designs, transforming over time through new materials, gemstones and interpretations chosen by their wearers.

One of Stephen Webster’s clients set him a challenge that would take his imagination in an unexpected direction - towards the ancient world of Himalayan Dzi beads.

Revered for centuries across Tibetan and Himalayan cultures, Dzi beads are among the world’s most mysterious and treasured objects. Recognised for their distinctive patterns and markings, these ancient beads have long been associated with symbolism, protection and spiritual significance, carrying stories that have travelled across generations.

Inspired by this rich history, Stephen began exploring how the enigmatic language of the Dzi bead could be transformed into a contemporary work of jewellery. This is where the skill and precision of Stephen Webster’s own goldsmiths comes in - pairing the ancient symbolism of the Dzi bead with intricate goldwork inspired by traditional imagery of lotuses and devils, reinterpreted through our distinctive design lens.

The result is a unique piece of jewellery that connects past and present - a personal symbol shaped by history, craftsmanship and imagination.

The Manta Ray Cuff is a deeply personal piece, reflecting its owner’s story and connection to the sea through a one-of-a-kind creation.

A special example of Stephen Webster’s collaborative approach to craftsmanship, the piece brought together a network of specialist makers. The body of the ray was sculpted by one of the UK’s most skilled goldsmiths, while specialist gem setters crafted the sapphire head and master engravers recreated the intricate texture of its skin beneath a bespoke enamel finish. Stephen’s gem-explorer approach to materials also introduced a new favourite called ‘Aquaprase’, adding further depth to the design.
