At Stephen Webster, our philosophy is to build a business to be a force for good. A Message From Our Founder & Creative Director

“As a family business of two generations, we honour the same attention to detail to the design of our fine jewellery, to how we source our materials and gemstones, with the belief that fine jewellery should not only be impeccably crafted, but also stand for something good, with sustainability at the heart of each step.”

Our Mission

Sustainability is a passion we share across the company. Our mission is to embrace challenges to become more sustainable in our practices, with a commitment to conduct our business in a socially responsible and ethical manner. We care about protecting our environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, global communities and beyond.

To help us achieve our goals, we are proud to have a dedicated in-house ‘Green Team’ who voluntarily come together to identify and implement specific solutions to help the business become more environmentally sustainable, aligning to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our ‘Green Team’ includes members from various departments and we are active in educating our employees on sustainability and communicate on our annual goals and progress, welcoming feedback and ideas.

Sourcing Materials Responsibly

Since 2021 we partnered with Single Mine Origin Gold to ensure our gold is mined ethically, and is fully traceable.

SMO Gold has been produced by a legitimate mining operation which holds no ties to conflict, and miners are paid a fair wage under secure employment. Furthermore, SMO strives to ensure that the communities living locally to the gold source are benefiting from initiatives carried out by the mining operation. For example, there are programmes centred on education, healthcare, safe drinking water and agricultural prosperity to support a wide number of people.

Every gram of SMO Gold can be tracked from the finished product back to the mine it came from. Clients have access to a QR code allowing them to gain insight into the community and environmental projects their purchase has helped to support.

In 2011, Stephen Webster was one of the first brands in the world to receive a Fairtrade Gold license. Today we offer Fairtrade Gold by request for our Bespoke commissions.

When purchasing a piece crafted from Fairtrade Gold, this guarantees the Gold has been responsibly mined and miners have not only been paid a fairer wage but have also worked in safer conditions.

Fairtrade also supports communities with a Fairtrade Premium; meaning miners can invest in projects to improve their communities such as healthcare, a better water supply and access to education

Our Precious Metals

We use recycled materials for our fine jewellery collections, due to its lower environmental impact. Recycled gold contributes 99.8% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than mined gold, and recycled Silver emits one third less carbon emissions compared to mined Silver.

As a next step, we are on a mission to work with suppliers who can offer traceability of source for our recycled gold and silver.

Understanding many communities are reliant on the mining industry, we believe it is important to support organisations such as Fairtrade Gold and Single Mine Origin, who not only provide fair pay and safe working conditions, but also invest in projects to improve the conditions of local communities. Initiatives include healthcare, safe drinking water, agricultural prosperity and education.

Our Diamonds

Stephen Webster has been an advocate of ethically sourced materials since his career began over 40 years ago. We ensure that our mined Diamonds are sourced from certified suppliers of the Kimberley Process Certification, a scheme that safeguards on shipments of rough diamonds and certifies them as “conflict-free”.

As a brand that is committed to future proofing our planet, Stephen Webster actively supports innovation that aims to reduce or eliminate negative environmental impact.

Backstage Passport

In our quest to offer greater transparency on the sourcing of our materials, in December 2022 we released the first stage of our ‘Backstage Passport’ initiative.

Accessible by a unique QR code in-store, and by downloadable link online, our ‘Backstage Passport’ provides 100% traceability of materials, as well as information on the environmental and social benefits for each piece of jewellery associated.

RESET

Everyone has items in their jewellery box that is in need of some TLC. In 2019, we launched RESET, an initiative that repurposes beloved items of jewellery turning them from broken and unworn, into modern, wearable pieces, using as many of the original parts as possible. In this way, we can be circular in our actions - not just in our thinking. Since launch, we have RESET 22 pieces of jewellery and accessories
